Rosacea Treatment: 3 Steps To Feeling Better

by Marybeth Quirk

Rosacea, a skin disorder effecting upwards of 50 million people worldwide, causing facial flushing and an acne-like appearance on the face and neck. While there is no cure or magic bullet to treat rosacea, there are a variety of methods used to control the onset of its symptoms. This article will address a three step approach towards effectively reducing and controlling rosacea.

1. Discovering what triggers your rosacea flareups.

Everyone with rosacea has their own “personal triggers” so to speak, these being causes that trigger the symptoms, such as facial flushing. The specifics change from person to person but the generalities are the same: exposure to heat in various forms causes rosacea to flare up. This is where personal action must be taken. Rosacea sufferers can, over time, learn what causes these triggers and then modify their behavior accordingly to minimize flareups. Many people find that following to act as rosacea triggers: hot tea, hot coffee, hot showers, hot tubs, heated pools, spicy foods, intense cardio exercise (which heats up the body), and exposure to the sun. Simple things like keeping a hat handy at all times can mean the difference between a flareup or no flareup. Others are a bit more tricky and might mean letting go of certain foods, drinks, and experiences that are otherwise enjoyable if not for the flareup.

2. Working with your doctor to try out different medicines.

This includes both prescription and over the counter medicines, as your dermatologists should be able to recommend good OTC medications in addition to prescribing you off the shelf medication. The point to stress here is that medicines are rarely something that work the same in mostly everyone - some people will find success with medicine A, but nothing with medicine B, and others will have the complete opposite experience. Taking the time to find what medicines work best to treat your rosacea is key. The only way to do that is with trial, error, patience, and a good doctor.

3. Using natural treatments to offer relief.

There are quite a few herbal remedies around that people claim help them when it comes to relieving the symptoms of rosacea. This includes things like lavender and licorice, which are usually applied topically to the face when a flareup occurs, offering near instant relief. Other natural treatments include regular intake of green tea and vitamin C. We suggestion you have the same approach in mind for natural treatments as with any treatment - try out different things, keep what works, and ditch the rest.

Rosacea is a skin problem that anyone suffering from must deal with. It’s not fun but it doesn’t have to take over your entire life. Once personal triggers are understood and avoided (as much as reasonably possible), and once medications and natural treatments are doing their job, you’ll find you have much more power and control over rosacea and its treatment.
