Rubbing Alcohol for Acne?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009
by Eddie Swans

As children, we all got injured at one point. And nothing good ever followed the injury. Usually, it was a mix of yelling and applying rubbing alcohol to the wound. Why alcohol? Because it had powerful anti-bacterial properties. Our mother’s didn’t want the wound to become infected. Most of us know that bacteria is more or less intertwined in the development of acne.. So, it would seem that alcohol would be a good solution to fighting the disorder. It turns out that this is far from the truth.

Misinformed people will often attribute acne to the presence of oily skin. Anyone who has the type of skin is bound to get breakouts when day or another. This turns out to be a fallacy. Acne is a multivariable monster. Individuals that have dry skin, for instance, can also get breakouts. They happen to fall on the other end of the spectrum. All that matters is whether or not other risk factors are present. Dry skin is one of them, as is oily skin.

If there is one thing we know about rubbing alcohol, is that its extremely drying. This drying effect can spur irritation, which ultimately increases our susceptibility to acne. The anti-bacterial effect doesn’t seem so lucrative when you take the entire picture in. It should be obvious that alcohol is not the key to clear skin. Many acne products contain some trace of this ingredient in them, and for the reasons outlined above they are not recommended. Always read product labels carefully to ensure you’re not being conned into a subpar product.

If despite the irritation you are set on using this in your treatment, please use moisturizer. It will help do away with the irritation and you will still get that anti-bacterial effect. If your goal with rubbing alcohol is to reduce the oil on your face, there are better alternatives that are far less irritating.

Blotting sheets and special mattifying products are always good choices. They won’t damage your skin like the alcohol can. Please spread the word around about the damaging effects of rubbing alcohol to your friends. You don’t want them to lose their battle with acne because of an oversight.

Ways of Treating Acne Scarring

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

It used to be that if you had acne scars from when you were younger, or developed them in adult life, you just had to live with them. There just weren’t really a whole lot of options available for dealing with acne scars. However, medical science is always marching forward, and in the past decades a lot of progress has been made.

There are a number of methods that can be used to treat acne scarring. They include natural remedies that use fruits or other homemade ingredients, and also surgical procedures like laser treatments. The kind of results you can expect from these different methods may vary.

There is not one method that is best to use for everyone. A lot of people who prefer homemade methods will tell you to stick with natural methods, such as using lemon and lime juice or herbal pastes. Although these methods may take longer to give you improvements, they are cheaper and easier to use.

However, if you ask your doctor about the best options for treating acne scarring, surgery will probably be the top recommendation. Surgical options can include laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, excision, subcision, and others. Generally, these methods are the most effective.

If you are trying to avoid surgery, you can also use various creams to fade away acne scars. They may require a prescription, but they usually do give good results in reducing the appearance of acne scars.

Whichever kind of method you choose to try, you may need to have a doctor visit. Home remedies may work, but if you don’t want to waste time trying dozens of them, just visit your doctor and see what he or she suggests.

My doctor recommended a natural remedy when I asked him how to get rid of pimple scars. Visit my personal blog where I reveal the alternatives he recommended in order to get rid of my pimple scarring. You’ll also find this blog post interesting: treating acne scars.

People who have a fear of needles should probably stay away from dermal fillers. This procedure requires that a sort of false skin that is made from human or animal skin, and can be injected into the scarred area. This procedure fades over time and needs to be redone, but reduces the appearance of scarring.

Excisions are surgical procedures in which a doctor cuts away the scarred tissue, and suture healthy skin over the area. This procedure creates a new scar, but it’s usually much lighter that the previous scarring. There are other methods for dealing with acne scarring - your dermatologist can tell you more.
