The Best Mineral Makeup for Oily Skin Types

by Amanda L Bricker

If you’ve got oily skin, you know that conventional makeup can actually irritate it and make the problem worse. Conventional makeup can clog your pores, make your face look like you piled the makeup on so that it’s cakey, and can be very hard to remove as well. By contrast, mineral makeup for oily skin can make your skin smooth, clear and flawless, without sticky or oily creams or foundations, and with no extra “shine.”

For best results, look for mineral makeup that doesn’t have paraben preservatives, or wax fragrance oils. Look for makeup that has vitamins included, and it may also be helpful to look for mineral makeup specifically formulated to absorb excess oil so that your skin looks younger and you have a nice “finish” on your face that lasts for hours. In addition, the makeup should contain SPF for sun protection, although mineral makeup naturally contains at least some of these benefits already.

If, aside from oiliness, one also has sensitive skin or are prone to acne and rosacea in particular, watch out for bismuth oxychloride, a chemical compound that gives makeup a shimmery and pearlescent quality in addition to a powdery white texture. This type of lead arsenic is commonly found in most mineral makeup products and can cause mild skin irritation.

One of the best mineral makeup for oily skin is the Bare Escentuals RareMinerals Skin Revival Treatment. This expensive $60 loose powder product absorbs a lot of excess oil and comes in many different shades, including a colorless one. Its mica base provides it with a lighter texture than mineral makeup with a bismuth oxychloride base.

Yet another product you can try if you have oily skin is Jane Iredale PurePressed Pressed Minerals SPF 18. Priced at $48, it’s slightly cheaper than the previously mentioned loose powder makeup and is also slightly easier and not as messy to use. It contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide for SPF protection, and has a matte finish that will not appear “cakey” when you wear it.

Next on the list is Monave Loose Mineral Foundation. This is available in a sample jar that costs just $25, so you can try out different shades with just a little “sheen.” It’s highly absorbent so that you can wear it for hours without any color changes in the makeup itself, and it’s also ideal for covering skin discolorations.

A fourth good choice on the menu is Prminerals Mineral Loose Translucent Foundation. Its dry and silky texture has a soft sheen, good for oily skin, and it won’t change color with wear or clog pores. Its active ingredient is silica, which absorbs oil well and does not cake up as other products might.

As with any cosmetic products you choose, the best mineral makeup for oily skin may differ depending on what other skin sensitivities you have. Read labels and choose your ingredients carefully when it comes to mineral makeup.
